He serves as President of several scientific societies, including the American and International Societies for Artificial Organs and the International Society for Geriatric Nephrology and Urology.
Dr. Friedman has been consistently listed as a “Best Doctor” in New York, as well as the National and International Who’s Who.
Dr. Friedman attended the State University of New York - Downstate Medical Center, where he received his medical degree in 1957. Thereafter, he served as an intern, nephrology fellow, and senior medical resident at Harvard Medical School’s Peter Bent Brigham Hospital from 1957 until 1961. After serving two years as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer for the United States Public Health Service’s Communicable Disease Center, from 1961 until 1963, Dr. Friedman returned to the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he is currently a Distinguished Teaching Professor of Medicine. SUNY Downtown Medical Center is one of the nation’s leading urban medical centers, serving the people of Brooklyn since 1860.
Dr. Friedman established the first federally funded hemodialysis center linked to an organ (kidney) transplant facility in the United States. His hemodialysis patients at Downstate’s neighboring affiliate, Kings County Hospital Center, formed the American Association of Kidney Patients, for which he served as Chair of the Medical Advisory Board.
Dr. Friedman was Chief of the Division of Nephrology in SUNY Downstate’s Department of Medicine until 2009.
Dr. Friedman is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Dr. Friedman holds professional memberships with several organizations, including the American Society of Immunology, the American Federation of Clinical Research, the American Association of Immunologists, the American Association of Physicians, and the National Institute of Diabetes. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
In 1976, Friedman invented the “Suitcase Kidney”, a portable dialysis machine scaled to fit a metal attache case that allows dialysis patients to be mobile while performing their hemodialysis off site, such as in hotel rooms or on ships.
Internal medicine or general medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys: the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease; the preservation of kidney health; and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. As an internist and nephrologist, Dr. Friedman has focused his professional career on kidney failure. He has also performed clinical studies in the course of diabetes and high blood pressure.
Married for 40 years before his wife’s passing in 1997, Dr. Friedman has three daughters.
