Albany, New York Jan 22, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Eleanor Reid, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Global Health at Yale University School of Medicine, will be presented with the Esther Pohl Lovejoy Award for Improving International Health from the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) at the 111th Annual AMWA Meeting in San Francisco in March.
The Esther Pohl Lovejoy Award honors Dr. Lovejoy’s work and legacy as a global humanitarian leader. She was a past president of AMWA, the first president of the Medical Women’s International Association, and long-time Director of the American Women’s Hospitals Service, AMWA’s charitable relief program. This award is given to a woman physician who has demonstrated interest and dedication to the promotion of international relations through improvement in international health.
“Dr. Eleanor Reid embodies the spirit of the Esther Pohl Lovejoy Award through her unwavering commitment to dignity, compassion, and equity in global health. By building emergency and palliative care capacity in resource-limited settings and mentoring women physicians worldwide, she brings relief, humanity, and lasting impact to patients and communities in moments of greatest need,” says Dr. Susan Hingle, AMWA Immediate Past President and 2026 Awards Chair.
Dr. Reid is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine and Director of the Yale Global Health and International Emergency Medicine Fellowship. As an experienced emergency clinician, global health researcher and humanitarian, Dr. Reid’s work focuses on strengthening emergency medicine systems and advancing access to palliative care in emergency and humanitarian settings. Her approach emphasizes equity, sustainability, and authentic partnerships with local health leaders. She recently served as principal investigator of a randomized controlled trial on early, integrated palliative care for cancer patients in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In Uganda, she co-led a qualitative study on palliative care needs and barriers in the Kirrudu Hospital Emergency Department.
She currently holds a Spark Award from the Yale Institute for Global Health for a community-based palliative care initiative in Ethiopia. In Greece, Dr. Reid is advancing a translational research agenda on emergency care capacity and system development. She has been invited to present nationally and internationally, including as an expert panelist at the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) on palliative care as social justice, and by the World Health Organization to contribute to a technical brief for heads of state in LMICs. Dr. Reid is widely recognized for her research, leadership, mentorship, and long-standing collaborations with global partners.
