The Wonder and Reward in Loving Tough Kids

  • Dr. Lawaune Moorman Releases Her First Book on Engaging and Inspiring Present-Day Youth

Chicago, Illinois Aug 6, 2024 (Issuewire.com)  - Dr. Lawaune Moorman announces the release of her book “Loving Tough Kids - Teaching the Youth How to Believe in Themselves, Unleash Creativity, and Improve Social Skills” (Publisher: Black Card Books).

Loving Tough Kids is a delightful true story that speaks to the passion of one teacher for young people. Urban youth go on a ten-month journey of self-discovery and learning. They begin the year “rough and tumble”, ready for conflict. A remarkable breakthrough and transformation in engaging and motivating youth to learn about themselves while studying literature occurs. Exploring one’s life and past is seductive and can animate a class by introducing new and alternative values, behaviors, and ways to present oneself. Literature that students analyze becomes much more interesting when they parallel their personal and ancestral experiences with characters’ motivations/behaviors and choices.

Dr. Moorman shares how she gained the attention, involvement, and trust of youngsters she met daily. Most students entered the classroom with shared social challenges: poverty, violence, exposure to adult language and images, salacious music, and ambiguous societal norms. But anxiety and the most destructive and debilitating belief was: “I don’t have a place in this world.” Actively taking time to explore, understand, and honor oneself changed the dynamic mood of the classroom and the students in it.

It was surprising how involved and perky students became when they learned that they belong, and share similar experiences, and that the characters and actions they are studying in class share similar issues. Relief and delight in the class give way to hope and then to curiosity. Anyone hoping to understand and engage youth will find a charming read and many strategies to keep pace with our rapidly changing youth culture in and out of the classroom.

Come to Dr. Moorman’s Book Launch on August 17, 2024, at the Reva and David Logan Center at 915 E. 60th Street, starting at 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm.
