Marking BIBF’s 40th anniversary, this year’s edition brought together over 1,700 exhibitors from 82 countries and regions, showcased 220,000 titles, and hosted over 1,000 cultural exchange activities. The Beijing International Publishing Forum explored literature’s role in fostering dialogue across traditions under the theme “Using Books as a Medium to Facilitate Communication and Dialogue, Leading to Cooperative Success for All Parties Involved,” while the United Arab Emirates took part as Country of Honor with programming centered on dialogue, tolerance, and shared civilizational values.
That framing offered a natural context for Dr. Wu’s memoir. Born in Shanghai in 1935 into a family described by the classical Chinese expression shu xiang men di—a household distinguished by scholarship—Dr. Wu was shaped by a Jiangnan scholarly tradition spanning generations. His grandfather’s study held floor-to-ceiling wooden bookcases arranged like a crossword puzzle; his mother embodied the quiet virtues of Suzhou; his father bridged classical Chinese learning and Western liberal arts. The memoir traces how that inheritance traveled across the Pacific and found new expression in the United States.
The book’s engagement with East–West encounters resonated with the fair’s broader emphasis on cross-cultural understanding. Dr. Wu’s account moves between Tang poetry and Wordsworth, between Confucian tradition and Reed College, between the Yangtze River Delta and Portland, Oregon, where he served as a longtime cultural advisor and board member of the Portland Classical Chinese Garden—itself a collaboration between Portland and its Chinese sister city, Suzhou. That dual belonging, and the tensions and rewards it carries, becomes the thread running through the memoir.
Scholarly yet conversational, Wandering Lonely as a Cloud offers a reflection on diaspora, memory, and cultural continuity across the twentieth century.
