Deepavali Celebrations 2022 in Singapore

Singapore, Singapore Oct 16, 2022 (Issuewire.com)  - Deepavali is the festival of lights. Deepavali comes from “Deep” meaning “light” and “avali” means a row in Tamil. It signifies the victory of good over evil. It is one of the brightest festivals celebrated by Indians staying abroad as well as in India. Here in Singapore, the district of Little India celebrates by putting up delightful lighting and a buzzing Diwali bazaar, where the young and the old enjoy the festivities with great vigor and exhibit a lively atmosphere.

Lisha (Little India Shopkeepers & Heritage Association) was established in 2000 to promote the precinct's heritage, culture, business, and commercial activities. Lisha has kicked in several activities and programs to celebrate this festival with fun and enthusiasm. Like every year, this year Lisha has planned several events for everyone to participate in irrespective of background. The Deepavali festival occurs on the 15th day of the Hindu Lunar calendar, this year it is on the 24th Oct 2022. The program started with the grand lighting of the lamp held on 16th Sept 2022 by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat. During the ceremony, DPM Heng quoted “Covid-19 has been a dark and difficult two years. But we have finally emerged into the light. The pandemic has turned endemic… We are resuming normal activities, including coming together physically in large groups with minimal restrictions, like today”. Indeed, Singaporeans & tourists have lauded the festivities and are flocking to the Little India precinct. Lisha expects to make a total of five million visits to Little India during this period.

What is a festival without food? Lisha had arranged live Cooking Demo Program to be held earlier in Oct.  The variety of shows is weaved by culture, tradition, and literature. The Miss and Mrs. Saree Queen show has been another popular attraction that was held at the start of this month. This along with competitions like the Best Decorated Shop and others were arranged where cash prizes were given. The in-person shows along with rewards have been entertaining and have brought back the festival fun. The spirits have been truly rejuvenated. These shows spanned through a couple of months and have been great opportunities to participate, learn about new cultures, and spread harmony amongst the community.

Little India has been named Singapore's coolest district for 2022 –and ranked as the #19 Coolest Neighborhood in the World. This proves a testimony of the festival delights that this season offers. Lisha had arranged virtual events in Covid times but this year we have in-person events that have doubled the happiness of the people here in Singapore. Post Covid-19 after the dark times we are moving towards the light, may this festival illuminate your path bringing in health and happiness and spreading love and peace.
