ORANGE, Calif., Dec. 10, 2018. The American College of Medical Scribe Specialists (ACMSS™) and the American College of Clinical Documentation Outcomes (ACCDO) remind consumers that open enrollment ends in most states this week, on Saturday, Dec. 15.

“Americans need to take time to review their insurance options, and closely check pricing, premiums, coverage, access, and benefits, to select the best options for them and their families, but time is running out,” said ACMSS™ | ACCDO Executive Director Kristin Hagen. “We ask consumers to avoid so-called ‘skinny health plans—cheaper, short-term plans that cover fewer services and put people at greater financial and health risk.  The ideal coverage is comprehensive, covering all of the Essential Health Benefits under the Affordable Care Act, along with pre-existing conditions.”

Over the summer, the Trump Administration extended short-term health plans from the 30-day limit under the Affordable Care Act and extended that limit to three years. Some of these plans do not cover some pre-existing conditions and can also limit coverage for prescription drugs, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, maternity care and more. They can also deny coverage due to gender and occupation.

“These short-term plans can also destabilize the health risk pools created by the Affordable Care Act by taking younger, healthier people out of the overall pool, potentially making healthcare coverage more expensive for everyone,” said Hagen. “Individuals and families who purchase full plans will remove substantial potential risk and protect themselves, their health, their assets, and the care their premiums are designed to cover. Anything less than this minimum standard is unacceptable in 21st-century care and cures. You can suddenly get hurt or become gravely ill, no matter how young or healthy you are.”

ACMSS™ and ACCDO believe pre-existing conditions are curable in a healthcare system based on prevention, wellness and 21st-century cures. Today’s 21st century care to cures is found in a framework of care in which Physician/Certified Medical Scribe Specialists (CMSS™) licensed teams to work together nationwide, filling current gaps in the system in the pursuit of wellness. Both ACMSS™ and ACCDO support maintaining stability in the current U. S. healthcare system, while allowing for greater stimulus toward healthcare transformation, care, and cures.

To get started on open enrollment and examine your options for healthcare coverage, go to www.healthcare.gov. Please note that open enrollment ends on Dec. 15 in most states except for the following: California (ends Jan. 15), Minnesota (ends Jan. 13), Rhode Island (ends Dec. 31).
