Dallas, Texas Nov 19, 2018 (Issuewire.com)  - Sergeant Demetrick Pennie, a nationally recognized law enforcement advocate, travelled to Washington, DC as a special guest of the International Garrisons of Freedom Conference. This conference paid homage to 58,000 U.S. soldiers that died in the Vietnam War. Sgt. Pennie, an army veteran, was a guest speaker at the conference. This conference facilitated more than 350 Vietnamese supporters from across the United States and abroad. These supporters all came to pay tribute to the 58,000 U.S. soldiers that died in the Vietnam War more than 43 years ago.

Sgt Pennie states, “The Vietnamese participants at this event spanned 5 generations, with the oldest being 98 years old. Many of the attendees were immigrants that recently settled in the U.S. but grew up under the oppressive tactics of the Vietnam regime. They are all grateful for the sacrifice of these soldiers.” Sgt. Pennie discussed with the audience how to enhance their relationship with law enforcement. Sgt. Pennie emphasized, “Don’t be afraid of the police in this country, they are here to help. You should not subject yourselves to unnecessary victimization in your communities due to lack of trust for law enforcement. The police are your friend.”

While in DC, Sergeant Pennie meets with Vietnamese Master Buddhist Monk Thich Thong Lai and Vietnamese Catholic Priest Thanh Nguyen. Sgt Pennie states the conversation with these religious leaders consisted of cultural, social and religious tolerance.

Sgt Pennie states this is the first of many planned events he intends to participate in across the country. He states that speaking with minority and immigrant communities about law enforcement helps to build trust in these communities.
