Comedy Veteran On Mission To Save Our Sense of Humour

Brisbane, Queensland Aug 15, 2018 (Issuewire.com)  - When comedian Fiona McGary had to face one of the most challenging times in her life, watching her father slowly fade away, it was her sense of humor that kept her feet planted firmly on the ground.

Sitting beside his bed with her sister, she’d crack funnies to break the tension. “We sat there for weeks, feeling like we were losing our minds because it took him so long to go,” she said.

“We were so tired and traumatized that even if for five minutes, we could have a laugh, it gave us a break from the pain.”

It was this painful time that inspired her created Grow With Humour workshop that she is running in September.

“It had been a work in progress for a couple of years and having made a career of making people laugh, I know how important it is for our mental health and wellbeing to not take life seriously all the time,” Fiona said.

“This workshop is to help people utilize their sense of humor. We all have one; some of us can tap into more easily than others. Like any other muscle in our body, we have to use to keep it strong and flexible.”

This career comedian, with almost two decades of making people crack up with her narrative style of comedy, wants to help people heal, grow and change the world with the power of humor.

“Let’s face it, we have become very serious people – over-regulated, overloaded with information and overwhelmed with all the bad news being dumped on us,” Fiona said.

“So many are struggling with mental health issues, depression and have stopped having fun. This life thing is serious stuff, but we should experience fun at least 50% of our time as we do not have long on this planet.

“At some point, we stopped playing, we got busy with life and somewhere along the line someone told us to stop being a child, to get serious, to study, get a good job but you can do both. It is ok to see the funny side of life.”

Our sense of humor is one of our most important assets but so many do not understand it. Fiona wants people to develop a humor mindset … to truly understand how it can make a difference in their lives and those around them. “Humour, used correctly, can help us see the joy in life, relieve tension and stress, and create a greater connection to the heart, which I believe is an antidote for mental health,” she said.

“That doesn’t mean you’re not going to have issues, but it does mean you have a more joyous place to come from and to see life from a different perspective.

“I believe a sense of humor is our seventh sense.”
