Tokyo, Japan Mar 13, 2023 (Issuewire.com) - With the recent newfound rise in popularity of nostalgic styles found in the Japanese City Pop genre of music and the aesthetics of 90's "magical girl" anime like Sailor Moon, a new manga combining these essences has been born. This passion project is entitled, "Love or Duty"; an exciting mermaid shoujo manga series featuring the fun and struggles of balancing romance, friendships, and high stakes heroism! The project was launched on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter on February 14th and will run until March 30th.
The author of "Love or Duty", Wade "Cito" Wheelington III, is a St. Louis native, currently living in Japan for 10 years, and has long aspired to become a shoujo manga artist. Having graduated from Tokyo Communication Arts College, Cito has spent many years honing his craft in manga composition and has had his work featured on various TV programs in Japan such as "Cool Japan", "Why Did you Come to Japan?", and "Whoever Thought of This is a Genius!" Looking at recent world events, Cito was inspired to create his latest project.
In the story of "Love or Duty," Shadows are plaguing the earth, bringing chaos as they poison the hearts of humans. The antidote to the Shadows is the melody of Love carried by the voice of Merpeople. Amidst everything Namiko, the mermaid with the most beautiful voice flies out to Japan to seek love and connection with Eiji, member of the pop-duo ExciTe, a band who uses music to weaken the influence of the Shadows. With the spiritual war heightening, Namiko is granted powers to seal the Shadows away and is torn between attaining her love or championing her duty as the chosen heroine!
With the 428 page manuscripts already drawn, "Love or Duty" is planned to be published independently into two volumes after acquiring ISBNs. During the Kickstarter campaign run, edits are being conducted along with test printings to ensure quality in preparation for when the $2970(approx) is reached. The reward tiers include small print artwork, digital versions, and/or physical volumes of the complete season 1 of the "Love or Duty" series.
