North Yorkshire, United Kingdom Jun 20, 2019 (Issuewire.com) - Richie Culver is a British contemporary artist from North Yorkshire. He grew up in Hull in the North East of England but now lives in Portugal where he works from his own studio. Richie also spends time in his London based studio.
He is proud of his heritage and proud of the North, where he pulls a great deal of his inspiration from his past experiences and the environment around him from growing up in the North. Richie has a clever way of taking the Micky out of his own life experiences, the working class he grew up a part of, and British politics. Using stereotypes to his advantage to create humorous and descriptive yet abstract works of art.
Richie has a diverse portfolio made up of Paintings, sculptures and photography. His initial interest in art came from photography when he worked on a caravan site. He saw similarities between his life and photography to those of highly regarded American photographers, Nan Goldin, Larry Clark. Both of which took gritty portraits, often of troubled people, using recreational drugs or performing sex acts.
The Hull-born artist is not afraid or embarrassed to talk about his own troubled past and struggles with drugs, but instead takes inspiration and motivation from the tougher times.
Richie's most noticeable exhibition would be his solo exhibition in the Humber Street Gallery in his home city of Hull, during, The Hull city of culture day. The exhibition is titled 'no one knows me like the dawn from the jobcentre' which is an autobiography series of paintings from the times when Richie had his weekly trips to the job centre. 'dawn is the human face of a governmental structure and is tasked with the decision-making process of qualifying a person for their job seekers allowance or no. the title of culver’s show constantly nudges a reading of the work that is diaristic – each painting cataloguing a chapter of liaison with dawn, full of laughter, anecdotes, sadness, and overshadowed by the shame, the distraction and the desire to be rid of a state-supported living that is conditional and irreverent to the daily concerns of the people who it aims to help.' (Richie Culver, 2018).
His most recent collection is titled 'dimensions variable' Which is a series of sculptures. Very little is currently known about this collection, only that each sculpture is very abstract and wide open to interpretation.
It will be exciting to see what is next for Richie Culver.
