The new pricing framework introduces four distinct tiers: Essential (free), Standard ($25/month), Complete ($50/month), and Unlimited ($500/month annually): Supplemented by what Bold calls "SmartFlex" dynamic pricing for Shopify retailers exceeding their plan's included view allocation.
Responding to Merchants, Not Market Trends
Bold's pricing restructure addresses a specific friction point in Shopify’s upsells app category, where competitors typically charge based on order volume regardless of offer display frequency. The view-based model ensures merchants pay only when the application delivers measurable value … When customers actually encounter upsell, cross-sell, down-sells or order bump offers.
“Previously, we charged like many of our competitors, based on store order volume," explained Britt Schmidt, Head of Bold’s Shopify Division. “But the app only delivers value when an actual offer is presented to an actual shopper. The new view-based model aligns our pricing directly with the value the app delivers, making it clearer and more performance-focused for merchants.”
The price shift also reflects broader patterns within Shopify's app ecosystem, where tiered, feature-based subscription models have become a standard expectation of merchants. Bold's adoption of this familiar structure makes pricing comparison more straightforward while reducing the unpredictability Shopify’s store owners were experiencing under Upsell’s usage-only billing.
“The space has largely moved toward tiered, feature-based subscriptions,” Schmidt noted. “So. A purely usage-based model feels unpredictable to merchants and makes it harder for them to budget. By adopting a structure they expect, we're just making it easier for them to understand.”
Bold Upsell and Cross‑Sell App’s SmartFlex Tiers
Central to the Smart AI Upsell and Cross‑Sell application’s new approach is the SmartFlex tier system, which dynamically adjusts monthly pricing based on actual offer view counts. Merchants on Essential, Standard, or Complete plans who exceed their included view allocation move into progressively scaled pricing brackets that range from $10 for 0-500 views monthly to $500 for 150,001-200,000 views, with additional capacity available to online retailers in $100 increments.
The new structure also includes a free entry point. The Essential plan provides 200 total views at no cost, allowing merchants to test Bold Upsell's AI-powered Smart Offers without financial commitment. After the initial 200 views, merchants enter SmartFlex pricing beginning at $10 for up to 500 monthly views. “The main goal was to simplify the pricing structure while adding tiered plans based on features used,” Schmidt said. “This allows store owners to install the Essential plan for free to test the AI-powered Smart Upsells with little to no risk. SmartFlex pricing is determined by the number of views allotted per month based on prior months' usage.”
For Shopify merchants who require advanced functionality ranging from custom upsells, in-cart offers and post-purchase pop-ups to email upsells and date-based conditions, the Standard plan provides access at $25 monthly for 500 included views. The Complete plan adds funnel creation and in-checkout offers for Shopify Plus merchants at $50 monthly. “Merchants can reset their SmartFlex tier in any given month to allow for dynamic pricing based on expected usage,” Schmidt noted. “This gives them control over their billing rather than being surprised by spikes.”
