4 Tips for Women Returning to Work after a Career Gap

This is very common with women since they are to carry a child and had to jeopardize their career for the sake of their family. The overwhelming feeling is a gift but also puts every career-oriented woman to put their career at risk. And to cope with this inevitable situation here are some tips that will help you to gain your position back.

1. Honesty is the Best Virtue

When there is a career gap the first action some people take is to cover it up by lying but this should not be the way. Be honest about your career gap when you want to rejoin work. For new mothers, the overwhelming feeling of having a child sometimes makes them quit their job and be with their kids. And this can’t go on for a long time. After say 2 to 3 years you will find the need to rejoin your work, and when you do you must mention this in your resume to clear it up with the company you are joining.

2. Wear Your Confidence

When people say confidence is the best armor you can wear they are absolutely correct. You need to be confident you have been a great performer when left the job for your changed priorities and increased responsibilities. But you need to clear it out with your interviewer so that they can have knowledge of your present situation and how much you value honesty and work ethics. And remember, the last thing you want to be is apologetic about your situation. Prepare well for the interview and put on your fighter shoes and you will get the job.

This may sound a little underwhelming but to get the job, you will need to feel confident, and there is no denying that when a woman looks good they feel more confident.

3. Revise Your Resume

Your CV should convey your confidence. Ensure that you need to revise your CV and include this career gap in your CV. Try to mention dates as well, this information will work on your honesty and a good company will always respect honesty over everything else when choosing their employees. But highlight your past experiences and also mention success in your resume. Along with your CV, you need to upgrade your wardrobe as well.

4. Reconnect and Importance of Certification

If you had been too busy to keep in touch with your previous co-workers then you need to reconsider it. Be it through any social media platform or via their personal numbers, you can re-engage with your previous office group or you can create a new one to ensure a better connection with them. 

If you have been working in one single domain then you might have a plethora of options to show your credibility. But if you have been changing fields from sales to marketing then you need to show your certification to ensure your seriousness in the job you are applying for.

Companies Should Introduce Re-Entry Programs

The enthusiasm to re-recruit someone after a career gap is decreasing every day. Companies have the notion that once there is a career gap then especially women are bound to have increased liabilities and responsibilities so that they will not perform as they have before. But this should be changed, as for women especially for new moms it is extremely essential to be financially independent. This is probably the high time for companies to introduce re-entry programs, and many large companies are going for the "Returnship" program and allowing people to rejoin their workforces.
