Before OUR Oceans Reach " The Point of NO RETURN" !

35 Years late, it will now cost TEAA over £300M to put things right

West Midlands, United Kingdom Jan 2, 2020 (Issuewire.com)  - TEAA (The Extraction Action Alliance) is investing over £300M in stemming the flows of waste entering oceans from 1000’s of estuaries around the globe.

The Oceans would Not be in the mess they are in today if the signatories to the 1982 Laws of The Sea Convention complied with what they signed up to do.

Across 6 continents, in over 150 countries, 1000’s of estuaries will have waste catchment barriers installed by TEAA to stop anymore more waste entering the oceans. (Estuaries are the very last point to capture the waste before it drifts out to sea and breaks up or sinks).

In 1982 over 150 Countries signed up to the Laws of the Sea Convention agreeing to;
SECTION 5.  INTERNATIONAL RULES AND NATIONAL LEGISLATION TO PREVENT, REDUCE AND CONTROL POLLUTION OF THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT
Article 207; Pollution from land-based sources........

Dr Christian Schmidt, a hydro-geologist at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research estimated that over 8,000,000 tons of waste enters the oceans every year, a staggering 21,000 tons per day (900 tons per hour 15 tons per minute)

With figures and statistics like that what initially seems a “mammoth undertaking” isn’t as difficult to complete when you understand TEAA’s methods; Splitting the world in to 6 continental zones, split the 6 zones in to the 150+ countries and confirm the number of estuaries that need a catchment systems.

Paul Manning, (TEAA’s Global Operations Director) – when asked about the companies responsible for ocean waste problems;
QUOTED: “You have to fence the hen house first before going after the fox !

150 Research teams - one in each country-  will start to capture data for barrier installations whilst completing the wildlife impact studies, (that’s the same amount of people that it takes to run a few large drive-through McDonald’s). Within a few months the majority of the data will be captured. Within a few months after that, the installations can start and the waste finally starts to stop entering the oceans.

£300M to complete this task within a few years seams difficult to believe, however, as Paul explained; TEAA deals with the coastlines, not the whole country, so when you consider the small island of the UK has one of the largest coastlines in the world, you then start to  understand how simplistic this plan is, and how easy it is to keep on top of.

Each country will have had waste catchment systems installed on their estuaries and an extraction vessel supplied along with equipment that can be deployed on beaches to keep those clean as well, this also includes various pieces of machinery that recycle what has been captured. (Wood to biomass fuel pellets and plastic is either granulated for re-sale or processed through pyrolysis back in to oil or gas)

The fact that this simplistic solution should have been taken care of 35 years ago isn’t the point. The point is; it is happening in 2020 ( www.teaa.ventures )
