BD Electrical Services and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHIO), like-minded organizations helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable planet continued their partnership to create clean energy solutions for the Marine Research Facility Energy Conservation Facility located in Woods Hole, MA.

Recent projects (photos below) completed at WHOI include electric vehicle charging stations, 800 AMP 480 Volt electrical distribution upgrade, and the installation of electrical power, light and heat wiring for the WHOI mobile research laboratory.

These clean energy organizations began their partnership at the WHOI Marine Research Facility, located at the Quissett Campus in Woods Hole. The facility houses nearly all WHIO researchers and requires detailed specifications suited to research needs including increased room, large freezers, medical-style imaging equipment, and facilities for dissection and necropsies. “Due to the needs of the researchers and the equipment required for their work, this building consumes a large amount of energy,” said Brett Duguay, BD Electrical CEO. “We analyzed their temperature and airflow systems to discover clean energy solutions that would handle their requirements.”

BD Electrical designed and installed a temperature and airflow control system to reduce HVAC energy costs. The 31,950-square-foot building was retrofitted with a vacancy, occupancy, and temperature sensors to control individual room temperature and fume hood airflow when occupancy was not present in a lab, office, or facility.

The building’s primary heating and cooling systems were designed with specific sensors and controls to operate together or independently, drastically reducing energy consumption. Offices and labs were programmed with custom set points to allow for a full 24/7, 365-day schedule.

According to Duguay, this energy conservation system will reduce total facility energy costs and consumption by up to 30%. “That’s important to both of our organizations. We are privileged to work with WHOI, helping them advance clean energy for a better planet,” he concluded.
