Barcelona Festival of Song: Celebrating 20 years of song

In 2024, the festival celebrates its twentieth edition with 9 concerts and two exhibitions featuring artists from both sides of the Atlantic.

Barcelona, Spain Jun 19, 2024 (Issuewire.com)  - The twentieth edition of the Barcelona Festival of Song, an event dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Latin American and Iberian art song repertoire, begins on July 5.

As every year, in addition to the Course on the History and Interpretation of Latin American and Iberian Vocal Repertoire, the festival presents eight free concerts with artists from various parts of the world. This year, in celebration of the 20th anniversary, the festival's leitmotif is the tree, a metaphor representing the interdependent ecosystem that integrates all the people who, over the years, have participated in the festival and contributed to promoting the repertoire worldwide.

To celebrate the anniversary, the Biblioteca de Catalunya organizes the exhibition "20 anys de cançons" (20 Years of Songs) in the Espai Zero, which opens on June 14 and will be open until July 20. This year's program includes:

July 5: Inaugural concert "Naturaleza mágica" (Magical Nature) with Patricia Caicedo, Nikos Stavlas, and Ricardo Urquiza, performing Latin American and Catalan folk and art songs celebrating nature.

July 6: At the Residència d'Investigadors, Grammy-nominated Cuban-American guitarist José Lezcano presents "Mojito y habano" (Mojito and Cigar) with works by Latin American and Spanish composers, including his own compositions. At the end, the exhibition "Un paseo por el bosque" (A Walk in the Woods) by New York artist Susan Martin, featuring large watercolors of North American forests, opens.

July 8: Special concert "Atardecer musical en el mar" (Musical Sunset at Sea), a two-hour sailing from the port of Barcelona with international singers in an evening for only 50 lucky guests. This is the festival's only paid activity.

July 9: At the Biblioteca de Catalunya, the award-winning Ibertrio from Portugal presents their concert "Entre el Atlántico y el Mediterráneo" (Between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean), with works by Toldrà, Piazzolla, and Portuguese composers.

July 10: At the Biblioteca de Catalunya, the concert "Gracias a la vida" (Thanks to Life) offers a celebration of Chilean music and poetry with tenor Pablo Willey-Bustos and pianist Mia Bach. Their recital includes the world premiere of two works commissioned by the BFOS, composed by Catalan Anna Cazurra to poetry by Chilean Jorge Nef.

July 11: At the Biblioteca de Catalunya, Brazilian tenor Lenine Santos and pianist Nikos Stavlas present "Autopsicografía", a concert of Brazilian art songs reflecting on the act of creating and being an artist.

July 12: A double program, with the first part "Amor perdido" (Lost Love) by Darci Bultema and Philip Everingham, featuring works by Joaquim Serra, Toldrà, and Villa-Lobos. In the second part, Brazilian pianist and composer Kadija Teles celebrates the African contribution to Brazilian music with the program "Danzas y Batuques" (Dances and Drums).

July 13 and 14: Final concerts at the Reial Cercle Artístic with singers who came to Barcelona to perfect the interpretation of songs in Spanish, Catalan, and Portuguese. These exciting recitals mark the culmination of months of hard work and celebrate the friendships and discoveries formed throughout the festival.
