Asian Association of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, together with hundreds of community organizations and Asian Pacific American Advocates across the United States, mourn the sudden passing of Judge Michael Kwan on July 21, 2020. Judge Kwan was the current Chair of the Asian Association of Utah (AAU). His leadership brought vision and stability to AAU. During his tenure as Chair of AAU, he oversaw over $30 million of social services and education programs. He planned strategies with volunteers and agency staff in using resources to save lives, help clients overcome barriers, improve refugee students’ school achievements, and assist human trafficking survivors to succeed. He was thoughtful, compassionate, and fun-loving. He took time to mobilize colleagues and volunteers to do their best and thank them for their contributions and accomplishments. In 2019, Judge Kwan booked a movie theater and personally paid for all tickets to treat community volunteers and AAU staff to a private showing of a newly released movie. He mentored hundreds of individuals in performing public services, celebrating cultural diversities, protecting individual rights, and empowering the disenfranchised community members. He dedicated his life to advocating for the civil rights of all communities. He championed for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders causes, but he also supported and strengthened the needs of other communities of color. As always, Judge Kwan told the truth. He moved hearts.
