Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. Mary Stout graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Philosophy. Mostly self-taught, she attended Virginia Commonwealth University’s Graduate Summer Studio Program. Her professional journey began at the Workhouse Arts Center, in Lorton VA. As a resident studio artist, she curated, exhibited, and produced monthly exhibitions. Stout also began painting in DC to connect with the community and share her process. Live painting became a large part of her practice. “Art isn’t created in a vacuum,” she says. “It grows out of experiences, observations, and events. That’s why getting outside the studio to create is so important to me.” Sharing what she has learned throughout her career as a painter and “ART-tertainer,” Mary has designed and led interactive painting workshops, as well as team-building exercises for corporations and community centers.
Mary's primary studio is in South Florida, but she paints in her San Francisco studio quarterly, where she just celebrated San Francisco Open Studios in her studio at 1890 Bryant Street Studios, Studio 317. Her art studio in Pembroke Pines, South Florida is located at Studio 18 in the Pines. The art complex offers studio space for emerging and mid-career juried artists, as well as gallery and exhibition space. Stout’s work is versatile and expressionistic, ranging from large paintings, and colorful abstracts, to cartoon-style pop art, and custom pet portraits. Mary's work is featured in the current group exhibition at the Studio 18 Gallery, The Thread That Connects Us, curated by Juliana Forero, Ph.D. – Chief Curator, The Frank Gallery, City of Pembroke Pines. The exhibition is on view from September 16th through December 2nd, 2022.
The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery recently featured a solo exhibition by Mary Gallagher Stout with artworks from her Urban mixed-media series, May 12 - July 23, 2022. The Frank is a multidisciplinary art gallery and exhibition hall located in Pembroke Pines, Florida. “MG Stout creates paintings with a radiant expressionist style with optimistic words and buzzing brush strokes. With an education in Philosophy, her familiar cartoon character subjects symbolize a spectrum of personas we come across in the world and possibly found within ourselves,” said The Frank of Mary’s work. Her newest series of works, which can be described as a combination of portraiture with abstract backgrounds, was recently selected for Artsy’s ‘CHOICE‘ Online Group Exhibition, Jen Tough Gallery, which ran August 15 – September 30, 2022, presented by Artist Alliance.
The artist is known for her expressive, one-of-a-kind, pet paintings. A dog owner herself, Mary understands that each animal has a unique personality, and she works to convey that through her work. Using the photo as a reference, she uses charcoal and pencil to make her initial sketches directly onto the canvas. She then mixes her own custom colors, and uses layers of glazes that help to add an expressive texture to the piece. The final piece is vibrant and tries to capture the essence of what makes it's subject unique. This is an unforgettable way to pay tribute to a current furry family member or to commemorate a pet who now lives on in your heart.
