Thursday, April 1, 2021 is Plain Donut Day in Canada. Celebrated annually on the first Thursday in April, Canadians pay homage to this favourite baked good in all its simple glory.
Dutch settlers brought their olykoek (oil cake) to the Americas in the 1700, but it wasn’t until homesick servicemen in France were served donuts in the trenches, by Salvation Army women called Donut Lassies, that plain donuts became a beloved treat that symbolized home.
Plain Donut Day 2021, however, is extra special, because a recent recipe discovery links the delicious treat to vaccinations. During this global pandemic, the link between Plain Donut Day and vaccines is very timely. The earliest known recorded plain donut recipe was just discovered and dates back to 1847 in a cookbook written by an English Baroness and wife of smallpox pioneer Baron Thomas Dimsdale. Dimsdale published The present method of inoculating for the small-pox while his wife compiled her favourite recipes including what may have been the first plain donut on record.
