What was the JCC's origin? When the first Jewish community centers were established as cultural hubs for Jewish immigrants in the 1850s, everything got its start. Early in the 20th century, JCCs began to offer athletic activities, and later in the decade, they started to provide summer camps, preschool, informal education, assistance for the elderly, and all the other services for which JCCs are now well-known. JCCs started to serve the broader community as Jews were welcomed into society's mainstream in America, and they now welcome members of all religions. The JCC was established in San Jose in 1973, and it was given official nonprofit status the following year. They relocated to their new 9-acre campus in Los Gatos in 1984, taking over the former Berry School location. Arnie and Cookie Addison provided funding to help buy the campus. Their organization became known as the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center of Silicon Valley because Mrs. Addison's maiden name was Penzak.
In 2005, the current building was opened. Gloria and Ken Levy, Eli Reinhard, and numerous more donors, whose names can be found on the donor wall in their main lobby, provided the funding for the building. Jewish Silicon Valley, a new organization that integrates the characteristics of both groups, was created in February 2021 as a result of the merger of the APJCC and the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley. As the programming division of Jewish Silicon Valley, the APJCC is still active. They highly appreciate all the community members that put in the effort to make the APJCC what it is today. The Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center of Silicon Valley encourages everyone to build a vibrant community and promotes everyone's well-being by connecting them to Jewish principles and customs.
People of all religions are welcome at the Silicon Valley Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Facility (APJCC), a Jewish nonprofit community center in Los Gatos. They seek to improve Jewish life in Silicon Valley and offer the entire community social, cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities.
