Recognized for his groundbreaking work in radiation biology and clinical care, he has made lasting contributions to patient safety, cancer survivorship, and radiation countermeasures.

Dr. Hauer-Jensen began his medical journey at the University of Oslo, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 1977. He then pursued a Post-Doctorate in Radiation Biology at the University of Iowa, ultimately earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Radiation Biology in 1988 from the University of Oslo. Early in his career, he served as a staff surgeon and director of the clinical trials office at The Norwegian Radium Hospital, before immigrating to the United States in 1990 to expand his clinical and research impact.

Upon arriving in the U.S., Dr. Hauer-Jensen joined the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System as a staff surgeon, where he served for more than 25 years. Simultaneously, he built a distinguished career at UAMS. He began as Chief Resident of Surgery, later serving as Instructor of Surgery, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and ultimately Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Surgery, and Pathology. He also served as Associate Dean for Research in the UAMS College of Pharmacy and was the Founding Director of the Division of Radiation Health, advancing UAMS’ mission in both radiation research and clinical care.

Dr. Hauer-Jensen’s research has focused on understanding the effects of radiation on normal tissues, particularly the gastrointestinal tract. His work seeks to uncover the mechanisms behind radiation-induced injury and to develop strategies that prevent both short- and long-term complications in cancer survivors. In addition, he has dedicated efforts to creating safe and effective medical countermeasures against radiological and nuclear threats, as well as addressing radiation exposure challenges in space travel. Over his career, he has authored more than 300 scientific articles and book chapters and has secured over $100 million in research funding from leading institutions, including the National Cancer Institute, NIAID, NIGMS, DTRA, and BARDA.

A recognized leader in his field, Dr. Hauer-Jensen has served on numerous national and international advisory boards and review panels. He is a former Chair of the Radiation Study Section at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and an active member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Society of University Surgeons, the Radiation Research Society, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer.

With a passion for both patient care and mentorship, Dr. Hauer-Jensen combines his expertise in general surgery, radiation biology, and drug development to shape clinical practice and guide research worldwide. His contributions have advanced the understanding of radiation injury, improved cancer survivorship, and strengthened global efforts to develop countermeasures against radiation exposure.
