A Sign of the Times: Sign Language is coming for Cannabis and Hemp Communication

The eCS Therapy Center hosts “Signs for the Times” An ASL Project

Boulder, Colorado Sep 6, 2018 (Issuewire.com)  - In American Sign Language (ASL) the most common sign for cannabis use just isn’t a fit for current medical cannabis users’ states Dr. Regina Nelson, President of The eCS Therapy Center, a national 501(c)3 non-profit organization. “A sign that mimics smoking a joint is simply not a fit for pediatric patients using cannabis oil for their epilepsy symptoms,” shares Nelson. For this reason and many others, The eCS Therapy Center is hosting “Signs for the Times” a project designed to develop sign language for cannabis and hemp-related communication.

Nelson shares that The eCS Therapy Center has brought together a team of Certified Deaf Interpreters, who have experience developing sign language for other medical purposes and having it accepted into ASL. She hopes this project on cannabis and hemp-related language has the same outcome. The team will meet in Denver October 17th – 20th for cannabis and hemp education and training designed to help them understand the language needs deaf people have in this area.

The biggest obstacle for Nelson and the Signs for the Times team is funding. Nelson states that because cannabis remains a Schedule 1 drug, federal and state funding normally available for projects such as this are non-existent. This means The eCS Therapy Center is relying on private businesses and citizens to fund this important project. Cannabis and help businesses across the country are hosting small local fundraisers and many private citizens have volunteered their time or made small donations to support Signs for the Times. Nelson hopes this trend will continue, she intends to raise more than $20,000 in the next month.

Deaf patients and other sign language users will have to continue spelling endocannabinoid system letter-by-letter according to Nelson until some time in 2019 when The eCS Therapy Center releases a video glossary of new cannabis and hemp-related language. But, she also acknowledges that “if we wait for state or federal funding to become available, people will suffer without the necessary communication skills for decades longer.
