When Ukrainian-born author and illustrator Svitlana Bortnik moved to the United States, she felt as if she had stepped into a completely different world. Writing a children’s book was not part of her original plan—yet a long-forgotten dream from her college days quietly returned.
Years earlier, before choosing a major, Bortnik often imagined what it would be like if storytelling became her true path. Starting over in a new country gave her the chance to revisit that dream. Out of her love for travel and her belief in the quiet magic of everyday life, Little Fox Luka and the Magic Map of the World was born.
The story follows Luka, a little fox with wide blue eyes, who discovers a glowing magical map hidden inside a mysterious chest. With it, he journeys through distant lands, magical cities, and ancient temples—only to realize that the greatest adventure is the one within. More than a tale about travel, the book celebrates friendship, cultural discovery, and self-exploration.
Bortnik recalls sketching Luka in a small café outside Seattle, sipping black coffee as the character came to life on screen even before the first words were written. Once Luka received his map, his adventures seemed unstoppable.
Created for curious readers aged 5–9 — and for anyone who remembers the wonder of believing in the impossible—this debut also marks the beginning of a planned series in which Luka will continue exploring cultures, values, emotions, and the quiet moments that shape who we are.
About the Author
Svitlana Bortnik is a storyteller, illustrator, and founder of Colo Decor Boutique. Originally from Ukraine, she now resides in Washington State, where she creates candles, artwork, and stories that softly glow. Little Fox Luka and the Magic Map of the World is her debut children’s book and the first chapter of a much larger journey.
