A national drive for fair drug driving law reform

Medical Cannabis & Driving

Sydney, New South Wales Feb 20, 2023 (Issuewire.com)  - Drive Change with the support of MedReleaf Australia as the seed funder today announced the launch of the Drive Change crowd-funding campaign. This campaign will help create a platform for equal driving rights and law reform for legal medical cannabis patients.

The team at Drive Change is seeking help to change the current drug-driving laws. Donations to the GoFundMe campaign will help make a difference in drug law reform history in Australia. As Drive Change is a volunteer organisation, they are looking to raise $70,000 to put on a full-time resource to dedicate their time wholly and solely to help educate law enforcement and lobby our State Governments for these laws to change.

MedReleaf Australia Executive Director Nathan Davis is a supporter of this campaign and believes that drastic change is required. “MedReleaf Australia is proud to be a seed funding partner in the Drive Change initiative. This is the single biggest issue for patient access in Australia since legal medical cannabis was established by the TGA many years ago. It is a change that is long overdue to give equality to patients regardless of the medication that their doctor prescribes”.

In Australia, with the exception of Tasmania, cannabis is the only legally prescribed medication for which you lose your license when testing positive for THC presence, not impairment. Medical cannabis is no less safe than other potentially impairing medications (such as opiates and benzodiazepines) that are prescribed by Doctors in Australia, yet patients are penalised for taking their medication.

Former magistrate and long-time advocate David Heilpern state “While the campaign has achieved some traction over the last 18 months, support from the industry and community is crucial to not only continue the work that we do at Drive Change, but to ensure that we are able to change these unfair and discriminatory laws.”
