New Bedford, Massachusetts Sep 7, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - RE: 14-YEAR OLD MATTHEW OLIVEIRA WINS COUNTRY CLUB OF NEW BEDFORD (CCNB) MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
The CCNB is abuzz with ‘the kid’ – club nickname given to 14-year-old Matthew Oliveira – who won the CCNB Men’s Club Championship yesterday against Ryan Hemingway (2&1). CCNB Head PGA Club Professional Vincent Forte noted on Facebook: ‘Congratulations to Matt Oliveira for winning the 2021 Men’s Club Championship! Matt played great for the last few weeks to become one of the youngest to win the Club Championship at CCNB. Congrats to Ryan for his runner-up finish. Good luck this golf season Matt. Stang has been a talented young man for the next few years. We look forward to seeing you get better every year!’
After qualifying into the Club Championships with fifteen (15) other players, Matthew Oliveira beat well-established local golfers including Nick Valm (4&3) in the round of 16, last year’s CCNB Club Championship runner-up William LaFrance (3&1) in the quarterfinals, and Standard-Times Player of the Year Paul Zeller (3&2) in the semifinals. Matthew faced Ryan Hemingway who outlasted last year’s champion, Adam Bradshaw, in 19 holes in the other semi-final match. Matthew Oliveira was looking to become one of the youngest Men’s Club Champions in the 119-year history of the Club.
As a junior member at both CCNB and Allendale, including participating in the summer junior golf program at Bay Club, Matthew Oliveira continues to play tournament golf at a high level this year. In April, Matthew won the United States Challenge Cup – New England Qualifier with a 74 and played in the prestigious Scott Robertson Memorial Tournament at Roanoke Country Club in Virginia. In July, Matthew Oliveira qualified and played in the US Kids World Teen Championships at Pinehurst, North Carolina. He partnered with a friend, John Scully (Winchester Country Club), to win the Taconic Junior Four-Ball Tournament / Two-Person Best Ball Gross (-7). Earlier this month, Matthew Oliveira also won the Allendale Junior Club Championship posting a score of 73 (+1). Matthew Oliveira has, over the years, continued to participate in junior golf programming including the United States Challenge Cup, US Kids – Boston Tour, Drive, Chip and Putt, and the JrPGA League.
Recently graduating from St. James/St. John School in New Bedford, Matthew Oliveira will be entering his freshmen year this fall at Bishop Stang High School. He has remained under the coaching tutelage of PGA Professional Gary Cardoza – Joe and Leigh’s Performance Center/Pine Oaks in Easton - and hopes to continue his love of golf at Bishop Stang High School with Coach Thomas Kennedy.
Matthew also enjoys playing basketball, soccer, and baseball – including as a member of the Dartmouth 8th Grade – Division I State Basketball Champions this year. He is the son of Roger and Christine Oliveira and has a sister, Taylor – the family lives in Dartmouth.
