My name is Zero Grav and I'm from Dimension 11. You, humans, are probably more familiar with my earthly realm of Los Angeles, California. I know what you're thinking, but my Earth form actually did originate in the City of Angels. I'm not a transplant. Unless you count interdimensional travelers as "transplants".
What makes you different as a person and as an artist?
As pretentious as it may sound, I am genuinely in this music game for the love of the art. I think a lot of people get into it for the money, and that's why when they make a lot of money, they don't release as much music. I just love to create. Having financial freedom is great. Of course. But I also really enjoy putting songs together and trying to push this art form forward in whatever ways I can. It's funny because they say as most people age, their taste in music narrows more and more. It has been the opposite for me. I appreciate even the music I think is terrible, because all music serves a purpose. All songs are exchanges of energy from the creators to the listeners. There is power in that regardless of personal preference.
What do you want to accomplish in life?
I could talk about this all day. I would say one of my top goals is to keep building my music catalog with the highest quality possible. I feel like I am getting better on every project, and I look forward to bending genres and breaking down musical boundaries on future releases. On a larger scale, I want to shake up the world. I feel like we underestimate the strength we have in numbers to come together and work towards making the world a better place. A lot of people are afraid of change, but everything in our lives was new at one point. Everything you have ever done was something you had to try for the first time at some point. I strive every day to be the best version of myself, but I feel like we never stop learning. There is an unlimited amount of knowledge, and it only grows every day. As knowledge expands, so do my goals. I want to write books. I want to make movies and shows. I want to own business. I want to build Long Sword Style into a great brand. Shout out to Neujack and Omoi. I want to help other people live their dreams. I really could go on all day.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I will have released at least 5 more music projects. We will have several shops open. We will have at least one studio open. I see myself moving into more and more of a mentor role and helping younger artists get their careers to where they want to be. I want to help everyone I love to become financially literate so they can live their best lives. If you're reading this, I want you to live your best life, too. Now go buy my albums. Honestly, I do want everyone to live their best lives. We've all been through enough. Your happiness will only add to my happiness.
What do you bring to the music world?
I am one of the few rappers with a degree in English. So when I write my rhymes, remember that. Those are university-certified. My degree helped me learn how to structure songs in more creative ways and develop a large vocabulary. What separates me from a lot of underground "backpack" rappers is I don't feel the need to be a strict traditionalist. I take the valuable aspects of pop-rap and combine them with the complex, multilayered lyricism of underground hip hop. A lot of these "lyrical miracle" artists trash mumble rap because they say that it doesn't say anything. The irony is there are thousands of underground rappers that just put a bunch of words together to rhyme. They ain't actually saying anything either. I realize that a lot of music these days is stuff that people only really listen to on a surface level that brings them instant gratification. I recognize the value in that. I love to make songs that give instant gratification but have deeper layers to them. Most of the lines I write can be interpreted in a lot of different ways. I like to leave some of it up to the listeners' interpretations. I want you to be able to dance to my stuff but also be able to have deep conversations about it if you choose to. A lot of pop-rap doesn't make you think enough and a lot of underground rap doesn't make you dance enough. I am bridging that gap.
What legacy do you want to leave behind?
It all comes back to working on myself every day to become the best version of myself. I genuinely want to help as many people as I can. I want to do as much good as I possibly can in the amount of time I have on this planet. I want to be one of the greatest artists that have ever existed. I don't mean this in terms of sales. I mean in b terms of creating a discography free of filler tracks. I want all of my songs to have real meaning and artistic value. That's what my career has been about from day one. Living life in zero gravity. Living without any earthly problems weighing you down. It is about living without limits and ascending to the highest version of ourselves.
