Twinfest Edmonton Launches Multiples Daze to celebrate National Multiple Births Awareness Day

Everything Twin Day. No Twin Required. Get Your School & Community Involved!

Beaumont, Alberta May 15, 2019 (Issuewire.com)  - Grab your twin or triplet or quad if you have one. If not, adopt your sister or your brother as a twin.  Get your friends together and dress up as triplets, or quadruplets or even as the famous Dionne quintuplets on whose birthday National Multiple Births Awareness Day in Canada falls each year.

Twins and multiples are not just real and fascinating but … Do you know more twins or multiples are being born now than in any other period in the world? Medical science has advanced so much it is now safer for mothers to conceive and deliver twins or multiples without a lot of complications. Many mothers in the past died while delivering their twins and many of the twins themselves did not survive or they encountered complications with serious or long-lasting consequences. It’s time to acknowledge this good news and celebrate all the research and medical technology innovations which have all contributed to a decrease in maternal mortality and perinatal and neonatal mortality.

Even today it is more common for multiple births to be stillborn than for single babies? Women with a multiple pregnancies face higher risks of complications such as preterm birth and most times these babies are admitted to neonatal intensive care after the delivery. Also, Segal, a leading Twin Studies specialist stated: “that second-born twin are at a higher risk for health problems including respiratory distress, neonatal trauma, and infections than are their just-older siblings.” Moreover, studies show that more than half of all twins are born prematurely and the risk of premature delivery increases with higher-order multiples. But there is something you can do about this. And that is to increase AWARENESS. There must be greater access to improved monitoring of multiple pregnancies which researchers believe will likely reduce the number of stillbirths.

But improved monitoring should not end after multiples are born safely and brought home. Many parents of multiples face a gigantic task when they bring their babies home. Mothers no more have the ‘luxury’ to heal from the considerable physical strain.  Moreover, their emotional, social and mental wellbeing is heavily compromised in an increasingly individualized society. Times have changed. Extended family and friends are busy working and trying to juggle a multiplicity of responsibilities. It’s nearly impossible to count on them alone to help. Communities are evolving. And yet we need to understand and develop community support for multiple births families, especially those who have no relatives or close friends nearby. Twin and Triplets Clubs constitute parents of multiples who themselves need social support from the wider community. Join us at a Symposium on May 28, from 9 am to 4:30 pm to dialogue about the Emotional, Social and Mental Wellbeing of Multiple Births Families at La Cite Francophone.

"Twins have a special claim upon our attention; it is, that their history affords means of distinguishing between the effects of tendencies received at birth, and those that were imposed by the special circumstances of their afterlives." -- Sir Francis Galton, 19th-century behavioral genetics pioneer, Inquiries into Human Faculty and its Development, 1875

Do you know Twins are so important to you! For all those out there involved in nature versus nurture debate, twins and science is a match made to settle it! Twin Studies is one of the most powerful tools in behavioral and genetic science (psychology today). Twin studies contribute to our understanding of the causes of human behavior. It has been employed to find answers to questions on space travel, obesity, schizophrenia, bullying, and IQ (elysiumhealth.com). The information gleaned from Twin Studies is used “to develop better ways to prevent and treat disorders and maladaptive behaviors” (msutwinstudies.com/why-twin-studies). Now you know why we celebrate.
