When Phil Martin first contacted TEAM (The Employment Agents Movement) he was coming to the end of a prison sentence. Phil had discovered that the people in prison came from a wide range of backgrounds and that the biggest factor in stopping reoffending was stable employment. His ambition was to set up a national employment agency to help people with criminal records to get jobs; but to cover enough of the UK to make a real difference, he would need to join forces with the best in the industry.
TEAM were the obvious choice, but would such well-respected industry leaders give someone like him a second chance?
Phil explained that he had established a careers department in prison that had helped 512 people into employment and that he was about to publish an A4 handbook called ‘How to get a GREAT JOB when you have a CRIMINAL RECORD’.
After his release in November 2019, Phil published his book and also launched Ex-seed, an employment agency serving the 11 million people in the UK who have a criminal record.
Within just 3 months of launching, Ex-seed began to receive referrals from Armed Forces charities, Careers advisers, Prisons and Job Centres, and consistently receives 25 - 30 applications each week from people who want to work.
Ex-seed advocates for each individual, particularly investing time in the disclosure process. Upfront and sincere disclosure help employers to understand what went wrong and what has changed to ensure it will not go wrong again in future; and also reveals personal insights into the character of each applicant. Employers regularly report a success rate of 95%-98%, proving that when people are given a second chance, they almost always prove worthy of it.
Phil met several times with the Founder, Directors and Leaders of TEAM and presented case studies of people with criminal records that were determined, like him, to turn their lives around. To his great delight TEAM have agreed to support this initiative and welcome Ex-seed into their network of independent recruiters.
Everyone makes mistakes, some big, some small. TEAM and Ex-seed find that an individualised approach helps both applicants and employers to find the ‘best fit’, and that if people take personal responsibility, honestly facing up to the past, they can have a better future.
