New Delhi, Delhi May 25, 2021 (Issuewire.com)  - Pandemic Causing Working Mothers To Sleep Less, Work Significantly More

  • Working mothers now sleeping averagely an hour less as compared to pre-covid times
  • They are also now spending an hour more in taking care of the elderly/others in the household than in pre-corona times
  • Household chores are like an all-time high affair taking almost 1/5thof their day as against 1/6th from the earlier days no pandemic days.

The Corona pandemic which started last year has taken a heavy toll on the working mothers in India with a significant reduction in their average sleep time and a more than a two-fold jump in time taken to care for the elderly in the family, according to a nationwide survey.

Working mothers in the country are now sleeping for only 5.50 hours per day as compared to 6.50 hours every day on average in the pre-covid era (before 2020), a reduction of about 17 percent. They are now spending 01.50 hours in taking care of the elderly/others in the family as against 00.50 hours on average in pre-corona times, according to a survey carried out by leading market research agency Market Xcel Data Matrix Pvt Ltd covering 1,200 working mothers across the country.

The pandemic has altered the routine and lifestyle of working mothers in many other ways as well. They are exercising/working out only for 00.40 hours now as compared to 01.10 hours on average in pre-covid times. Similarly, they are spending far little time on their entertainment of just 01.20 hours now as against 02.30 hours earlier.

Even the time required to complete office work has gone up for them. They are now spending 08.55 hours to finish office work as compared to 06.50 hours earlier. They are also experiencing more time taken to accomplish home chores with the time now required being 04.45 hours as against 03.40 hours needed before 2020 with the absence of housemaids in many cases.

The working mothers are also spending a lot more time on their children’s education now with the absence of proper guidance in schools. They are spending 02.10 hours now while they were devoting 01.20 hours per day on average earlier.

“The present pandemic situation has got ripple effect into everybody’s life. Life has changed since 2020 various factors like how we work, how we behave, how we think and last but not least how we are coping up with the New Normal. The working mothers have especially been impacted who are burdened and stressed working round the clock fulfilling professional responsibilities and household duties. Multitasking and playing many roles simultaneously is gradually becoming hectic. Working mothers have to compromise with their exercise and sleep. Managing office and home school (of kids) at the same time at the same pace is definitely not easy and we need to give some extra care for the caregivers,” said Mr. Ashwani Arora, Senior Vice President, Market Xcel Data Matrix Pvt Ltd.

However, if there is one factor where they have scored positively is the time taken to commute. They are now spending only 00.20 hours as compared to 02.10 hours earlier, a reduction of about 85 percent.

About 64% of the survey respondents were aged between 25-35 and the rest were between the age of 36-45 years. The average number of adults in the family of each respondent was 3 and the average number of children for each one of them was 1.5. Around 30% of the respondents reported more household chores since the pandemic has started and about 26% of them said there were more childcare responsibilities. As much as 30% reported mental health issues since 2020 while another 26% said they were acing some kind of physical health issues.

A total of 1,200 working mothers were surveyed in 17 states across the country. The study was conducted online using market Xcel’s proprietary panel Xcel-Online Surveys. Xcel-Online Surveys is an actively managed panel. The panel is recruited and managed in-house by a dedicated team of specialists from online and technology areas.
