Los Angeles Company Demonstrates the World’s First Backup to the Global Positioning System

Next Generation Positioning and Timing Technology

Los Angeles, California Apr 18, 2019 (Issuewire.com)  - Merlin Technologies Inc. today announced successful field test results of its next-generation global positioning and timing system. When completed, MERLIN will be an alternative to GPS with both outdoor and indoor positioning and timing services. Instead of weak satellite signals, MERLIN uses powerful commercial existing land-based signals with a pervasive reach that cannot be jammed or spoofed.

“Imagine the increased security this new technology can bring,” said George Weischadle, CEO and founder of MERLIN. “With MERLIN, positioning services can follow a person or object outdoors and indoors seamlessly throughout the country and with no risk of jamming or spoofing.” MERLIN's pervasive propagation coverage means that protected persons can be securely located, and that lost or stolen property with embedded MERLIN technology can be recovered, indoors and out over wide areas. Position measurements are performed with high accuracy in three dimensions, so a protected person or object can be pinpointed to a specific floor in a high-rise building for example.

The need for MERLIN has never been more immediate. Just a few months ago, President Trump signed into law the National Timing Resilience and Security Act that directs the Secretary of Transportation to implement a landbased, reliable alternative to Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. The bill ensures the availability of high-quality timing signals for military and civilian users in the event of an attack on our satellite infrastructure.

“The need for accurate indoor and outdoor positioning is well known,” said Weischadle. “The FCC has issued position-reporting standards for emergency cell phone calls, but compliance has been poor until now. Missing and abducted children and infirm adults frequently need to be located indoors.
Lost or stolen property, such as laptop computers, must be locatable indoors. Before MERLIN, no wide-area positioning system met these long-standing needs.”

MERLIN uses the structure-penetrating properties of existing radio signals to protect persons and assets wherever they are, even indoors where there is no view of the sky. Land-based transmitter powers and frequencies are far more effective than satellites at penetrating structures and resisting jamming, and they are better as position references because they are so numerous.

MERLIN is not only a worldwide alternative positioning system to GPS, but it is also the only available global backup for GPS timing services upon which the world's economy and security today depend. A demonstration system is operating today in the greater Los Angeles area.

About MERLIN

The mission of MERLIN is to bring reliable global location and security services to everyone, wherever they are, using innovative aerospace technology solutions. MERLIN was founded in 2011 by the engineers who established Sattel Technologies, Inc. over two decades earlier. Sattel went on to become a leading supplier of satellite telecommunications network equipment to governments worldwide. MERLIN, which received its first funding in July 2012 has become the leader in next-generation positioning and timing.
