On February 27, 1844, the Dominican Republic won its independence for a second time from the country of Haiti. They were determined to be a fully free people from Spain, Haiti, and any other country that attempted to stake a claim on their territory. The DR spent the following years manifesting a culture that would penetrate generations to come.
