Pittsburg, California Sep 11, 2019 (Issuewire.com)  - An Islamic town’s story of a little girl surfaces into cultural intrigue on Syed Raza Haider’s A Tulip in the Desert. The book tells of a nine-year-old’s life as a young girl from a small Waziristan village in northern Pakistan.

Girls’ fate from this region are very constrained and are decided by their male relatives. As if life wasn’t hard enough, the protagonist Amina develops a passion for an elite sport, which is entirely forbidden. Everything escalates when Taliban refugees start imposing their new versions of Islamic laws on their village. With Amina’s village torn as collateral damage by the Afghan War and a target of Taliban vengeance at the same time, her dreams of participating in a sport on an international level depend highly on herself.

An Amazon customer shares, “Excellent read! The author takes you to a remote village in Pakistan and vividly portrays the culture and the life experience of a young girl going against all odds to live her passion. Through reading this, I too felt like I was living in that village with this family and experiencing their struggles and fears. This book is not only telling a story about a young girl, it also captures the real historic events as it was occurring during the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and how it had trickled to Pakistan.”

Syed’s work will be exhibited at the Manila International Book Fair to be held at the SMX Convention Center Manila, Mall of Asia in Pasay City, Philippines this coming Sept. 11- 15, 2019 from 10am-8pm at the Authors Press booth no. 2-35.
