Dubai, United Arab Emirates Sep 10, 2020 (Issuewire.com)  - A South African born American doctor based in Dubai UAE has urged everyone to keep their facemasks on at all times especially when they are in public as an effective measure to help slow the spread of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19

Speaking at a press conference in Dubai, UAE, Dr. Michael Audo Sachs, explained the effectiveness of wearing face masks in slowing the spread of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19

"Face masks help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Because it is possible to have coronavirus without showing symptoms, it is best to wear a face-covering even if you think you are healthy. A mask helps contain small droplets that come out of your mouth or nose when you talk, sneeze, or cough. If you have COVID-19 and are not showing symptoms, a face mask reduces your chance of spreading the infection to others. If you are healthy, a mask may protect you from larger droplets from people around you." Says Dr. Sachs.

According to David Abrams, a professor of social and behavioral sciences at NYU School of Global Public Health, humans tend to long for a sense of belonging in uncertain times—and that applies to people on both sides of the political spectrum. People who don't wear masks may see it as a sign of solidarity as if they are together making a stand against authority, while those who do wear masks likely see it "as an act of altruism and a way of helping each other out," Abrams said.

To get a man-on-the-street perspective of these decisions, Steve Lopez, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, walked through downtown Glendora, California, at lunchtime on Tuesday to ask people about their thoughts on wearing masks in public. Lopez estimated that he saw "one-third with [masks], two-thirds without."

One of the people Lopez spoke with—a 77-year-old man who was not wearing a mask—said people wearing masks were "probably driven by political scare tactics," adding that he didn't know anyone who had contracted the new coronavirus. The man said he believed that if case counts of the virus are increasing, it's likely due to more diagnostic testing rather than a surge in the novel coronavirus' spread.

It has been reported that in the US when most states and cities re-opened, most citizens would not wear the mask as a result of the conflicting report from the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and the World Health Organization, which previously stated that the spread of the virus was not prevented by face mask.

Recently, the CDC and the World Health Organization has declared the wearing of face masks as an effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19

"The conflicting reports by the CDC and the WHO may have been the reason why people think the face masks aren't effective, however, both bodies have also issued a recent statement that explains how and why it is effective. There is no gainsaying the fact that cloth facemask does help in slowing the spread of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19" concludes Dr. Michael Audo Sachs.
