Flint, Michigan Sep 24, 2018 (Issuewire.com) - Discover Bugs, LLC is a newly established educational organization that focuses on entomology - the study of insects. It is presented by entomologist Ryan Huether and insect enthusiast Andrew Markey and serves Mid-Michigan. The goal of the program is to spark kids' early interest in science through hands-on activities using live and preserved bugs.
In an effort to spread awareness of the lack of gender equality in the field of entomology, Discover Bugs has enlisted as a community partner with Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan (GSSEM), as it has always been a male-dominated discipline, despite increasing levels of female graduates in the field.
“I have noticed this trend throughout the years so I wanted to get more women interested in the study of insects, and what organization was better to partner up with than Girl Scouts of America? I am hoping that our workshops will encourage girls to get involved in science and ultimately increase their odds of finding jobs in the field,” explained Andrew.
Girl Scouts already has a fun and interactive Bugs Badge for Brownies (Grades 2–3), which is designed to help girls learn about bugs and gain new skills. The Discover Bugs program will follow the Brownie Bugs activity plan and fulfill all five steps of the badges’ requirements. The workshop will include an introduction to insects, fun activities, and a display of live and preserved bugs that the scouts can interact with.
Andrew says “Getting children interested in bugs at an early age is crucial to dismiss the myths that surround these invertebrates. Most of the fear that we have with bugs is usually a result from media or parents, portraying these animals as dreadful creatures, but through outreach opportunities, kids get to see some of these bugs up close, while providing them the chance to ask questions and even interact with them.”
