Author Reconstructs Folk Tales from Her Childhood in Debut Book

African oral tradition comes alive in this volume of short stories

Los Angeles, California Mar 26, 2019 (Issuewire.com)  - Cultural consultant and French-language teacher Angele Kadima-Nzuji Kabwasa’s debut book, “Song Of The Mermaid: and Other Folk Tales from the Congo” is a collection of short stories that highlight the rich and diverse traditional customs and way of life in Africa, particularly in Congo, widely known as the heart of the continent.

When she was young, Kabwasa often listens to the village storyteller, Tatu Mupuila. On Saturdays towards sundown, he sings songs and chants prayers with his likembe (thumb piano) to an audience of neighbourhood kids. From this memory, the author reproduces some of the best stories she remembers from Mapuila.

The book is highly rated in Amazon and Goodreads. One of the reviews on Amazon indicates that the “book is full of beautiful, poignant stories designed to be read, to yourself or aloud.” The same reviewer adds that he enjoys the “gorgeous illustrations” and that “every story has a lesson to be applied to real life.”

Authors Press will showcase “Song of The Mermaid: and Other Folk Tales from the Congo” at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books to be held at the University of Southern California campus this coming April 13 to 14, 2019. Kabwasa’s book will be exhibited at Authors Press’ booth number 937.  Readers from all ages, including filmmakers and movie producers, will get an exclusive preview of her work during the festivities.
