Schaumburg, Illinois Apr 23, 2019 (Issuewire.com) - The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) is opposed to proposals that allow advanced practice nurses (APRN) to practice medicine independent of a physician's clinical oversight.
While AMWA acknowledges the challenges that exist within the health system, we believe that providing physician-led, patient-centered, team-based patient care is the best approach to improving quality care for patients. AMWA believes that proposals to allow APRNs to practice independently from physicians undermine delivery of care within the healthcare system. All patients deserve access to physician expertise. With over 10,000 hours of education and training, physicians bring tremendous value to health care systems all across the country.
In healthcare, the path of college, medical school, residency, and fellowship provides rigorous training that leads to a vast knowledge base. Only years of breathing medicine day in and day out can provide the kind of expertise necessary to treat patients with the highest quality of care possible.
AMWA urges legislators across the U.S. to maintain the physician-led model within the health system. In order to ensure greater coordination of care and improved health outcomes, legislatures and Congress should abandon any current and future proposals allowing APRNs to practice medicine independently.
